Representatives of Palestinian factions, including Hamas and its rival Fatah party, on Sunday denied their interference in Egypt's internal affairs, asserting their respect for the Egyptian people's will in choosing their ruling authority.

"We are keen on not harming the Egyptian security and safety and we are committed to neutrality... We hope that stability will be restored quickly in Egypt," the factions said in a statement following their meeting in Gaza.

Egypt raided smuggling tunnels along its borders with Gaza while local media accused Hamas, an offshoot of Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, of taking part in violent attacks against Egyptian security targets in Sinai.

The factions also condemned Egyptian media reports that Palestinians were meddling in Egypt's current political crisis, describing these reports as "rumors and lies."

The factions called on Egypt to cancel its recent measures to restrict the movement of Palestinians through the Rafah crossing point, Gaza's primary gate to the outside world, and to stop a campaign to demolish the tunnels, which serve as the main path for construction materials and fuel for the enclave. .
