Seventy-two people were put under administrative detention for spreading rumors online about terrorist attacks in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region from June 28 to July 15, the Urumqi-based Xinjiang Daily reported Tuesday.

During this time, 199 people were punished for disseminating 802 rumors, following the deadly assault on June 26 that killed 35 people, including 11 attackers, in the township of Lukqun, Shanshan county in the region.

Local police in the region said most of those disseminators are unemployed and migrant workers, as well as students.
