The appeal court of the Afghan Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) had convicted 12 Afghans of drug trafficking and sentenced them in jails, the CTJF media office said in a press statement Wednesday.

"The appeal court of the CJTF recently sentenced 12 persons based on convincing evidence from two years and two moths to 20 years jails," it said.

The statement did not disclose the name of the convicts, only saying they were captured by police in Nimroz, Badghis, Jawzjan Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Balkh and Kabul provinces.

It said 21 kg of heroin, 83 kg of opium, 123 km of hashish and more than 60 liter of alcohol were found and seized from the convicted people.

The insurgency-hit Afghanistan produces about 74 percent of the world's opium, the raw element for making heroin, officials said last month.

According to officials, more than 3,700 tons of opium were produced in Afghanistan in 2012.
