Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will visit Egypt on Sunday for the first time since the Egyptian military overthrew Islamist-oriented President Mohamed Morsi early this month, an aide to Abbas said Thursday.

Abbas will meet Egypt's interim President Adli Mansour to discuss the ongoing US efforts to revive the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Abbas, in his meetings with Egyptian officials, will also discuss the situation in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip, which borders Egypt and is controlled by Islamic Hamas movement, a main rival of Abbas' Fatah party and an offshoot of Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails.

"President Abbas will reemphasize the Palestinian position not to intervene in the internal Egyptian affairs," the aide said.

Fatah officials have often slammed Hamas' media for dedicating coverage to Egyptian protests in support of Morsi.
