The New South Wales (NSW) Health is contacting passengers who were close to a measles infected passenger on China Southern Airlines flight CZ 301 that landed in Sydney on Monday, local media reported on Friday.

The state health authority warned anyone who was on the plane should also be alert for symptoms in the next two weeks, according to the Australian Associated Press (AAP).

Symptoms include fever, tiredness, runny nose, cough and sore red eyes before a red, blotchy rash appears.

NSW Health Communicable Diseases Director Vicky Sheppeard said measles is highly contagious for anyone who is not fully immunized.

"So far this year seven travelers have returned to NSW with measles infection, all of whom were under 47 years of age, none of whom had received two doses of measles vaccine," Sheppeard said in a statement on Friday.

"Complications can range from an ear infection and diarrhea to pneumonia or swelling of the brain."

Sheppeard said people who develop symptoms should call their doctor beforehand to avoid infecting others.
