US Secretary of State John Kerry is likely to visit Pakistan in the coming two days, a government statement said on Friday after a meeting between Pakistani Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and the US ambassador Richard Olson in Islamabad.

The meeting was held in advance for the visit of John Kerry, who is likely to visit Pakistan in the coming two days, a statement from the Pakistani PM office said.

The ambassador shared with the prime minister US priorities relating to the visit. He also took the opportunity to brief the Prime Minister on Pakistan-US relations and the regional situation, it said.

This will be Kerry's first visit to Pakistan since the new government in Pakistan was formed last month.

The Foreign Ministry has indicated that the controversial issue of the US drone strikes in the country's tribal regions will be raised during the visit.

"The prime minister also conveyed to Ambassador Olson that he looked forward to receive Secretary Kerry and in addition to sharing views on the present state of the relationship, he also wanted to share a vision of bilateral relations in the future," the statement said.

Nawaz Sharif affirmed to the ambassador his commitment to a strong and cooperative relationship with the United States.

He also reiterated Pakistan's full commitment to all initiatives designed to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan and informed the ambassador of the recent visit of his advisor on national security and foreign affairs to Kabul.
