Cosmetic surgery hospitals are aggressively promoting summer sales that specifically target students preparing for job interviews, the Beijing Youth Daily reported on July 29.

Some hospitals are offering student discounts as much as 65 percent, with double-eyelid surgery costing 1,800 yuan ($293).

"Low price seems to attract more students," said an employee at one cosmetic surgery hospital.

Teen plastic surgery often peaks in July not only because it coincides with summer vacation, but also it affords those getting nose jobs and other procedures a two-month summer holiday to recover, according to Yao Yao, a medical consultant.

Many teenagers electing for cosmetic surgery are open about their motivation to become more competitive.

“All teens I’ve met in the hospital looked fine before surgery. They are all open-minded, love to dress well and just want to look prettier through plastic surgery,” said a student surnamed Sun from Shandong Province who had recently went under the knife.

Others have voiced their opinions against teens undergoing cosmetic surgery just to land a better job.

"Natural is best," said recent graduate surnamed Xiao from Renmin University of China.

"Of course being pretty is an advantage, but one can’t survive the interview without having skills," said a human resources employee at an IT company in Beijing.

According to national health regulations, only legal adults are allowed to undergo plastic surgery, while those under the age of 18 are eligible with a parent’s permission.

However, surgery for teenagers under the age of 18 is not recommended, said Yao.
