At least 136 people were killed in tribal clashes in Sudan's Darfur region, a local official told Xinhua.

"Clashes broke out on Monday between Miseria and Al-Salamat tribes in Central Darfur state," said Ahmed Abdul-Rahman Al- Dikhairi, an administrator of Miseria tribe, adding that "108 members of Al-Salamt tribe and 28 members of Miseria tribe were killed during the clashes."

Al-Dikhairi said the clashes at Garcilla locality started as a fight between two people but soon developed into an armed battle between the two tribes that lasted for more than 10 hours.

He said the clashes have ceased but the situation in the area remains tense.

Darfur has been witnessing a wave of tribal violence and reconciliation efforts have so far failed to quell it, which has claimed hundreds of lives in the region.
