The State Internet Information Office said Wednesday that 107 illegal websites have been shut down for operating without permits, conducting interviews in the name of news organizations and editing false information for blackmail.

The crackdown is part of a campaign launched on May 9, which aims to standardize online news dissemination.

Some websites also specialized in blackmailing companies and individuals by threatening to publish false information, according to a statement issued by the office.
