A newborn baby who was allegedly sold to human traffickers by an obstetrician in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province was returned to his parents on Monday, local police said.

Yang Jianlong, a policeman from Fuping county, where the alleged trafficking took place, handed the baby over to Lai Guofeng and his wife at the county's maternal and child healthcare hospital.

Yang said that DNA tests confirmed the baby is Lai's son.

The baby was allegedly sold for 21,600 yuan ($3,527) by an obstetrician surnamed Zhang on July 17, one day after he was born in the hospital. Zhang and five other suspects have been detained on suspicion of human trafficking.

The baby was found in Anyang of neighboring Henan Province at around 3 am Sunday and was in good condition.

The hospital's head Wang Li and two deputies were sacked on Sunday over the case. Local police said they are investigating five similar cases that allegedly occurred at the same hospital.
