Fiji wants to host a leg of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tour next year at the South Pacific island country's renowned Intercontinental Golf and Spa Resort, a senior government official said Saturday.

Viliame Naupoto, minister for youth and sport, made the comments while opening a local primary school golf competition at the resort town of Nadi, according to the Ministry of Information.

"We are going to meet with the PGA next week to put our bid to host a leg of the PGA Tour which will see the top golfers playing for the very first time in Fiji," Naupoto told the students.

"Golf is a very big sport around the globe and we are very proud to have the Fiji flag also flying high in the golfing world thanks to our very own former World number 1 -- Vijay Singh," Naupoto said.

The minister, a golfing enthusiast himself, told the students some important lessons that the sport of golf teaches.

"It teaches you to be honest, discipline and instills in you integrity. It's not a noisy sport and it also promotes good sportsmanship as you will see competitors acknowledging good shots, " he said.
