Mainz midfielder Nicolai Mueller donated a brace to secure a 3-2 win over Stuttgart meanwhile Schalke and Hamburg shared points to close the first round of the German Bundesliga on Sunday.

Stuttgart took over at Mainz to control the opening period, but as the match progressed the hosts gained a foothold into the match. Nicolai Mueller broke the deadlock for Mainz 14 minutes into the game to stun the visitors with a strike from 13 meters.

It was a short-lived joy by Mainz as Stuttgart responded only two minutes later through Vedad Ibisevic, who restored parity with a volley from five meters.

Mainz took the lead again at the 65th minute when former Stuttgart striker Shinji Okazaki utilized a cross by Zdenek Pospech. The "Swabians" piled on the pressure to avoid a loss at the first match of the season. Yet, Mainz goalkeeper Heinz Mueller denied Stuttgart a couple of goal scoring chances.

Mainz extended the lead as Nicolai Mueller danced through the defence to make it 3-1 on the scoreboards with 78 minutes played. Stuttgart's Martin Harnik kept the spectators in suspense when he poked home a fumble by keeper Mueller to reduce the lead to 3-2 eight minutes before final whistle. The hosts remained unimpressed and were able to kill the clock for the first win of the season.

Elsewhere, Schalkes new signing Adam Szalai scored the equalizer to ensure his side a 3-3 draw with Hamburg.

The "Royal Blues" caught a bright start when Klaas Jan Huntelaar overcame Rene Adler with a low shot from 28 meters into the bottom left to break the deadlock with just 83 seconds into the game.

The visitors needed ten minutes to level the scores as Rafael van der Vaart converted a handball penalty, caused by defender Joel Matip. Hamburg made use of their momentum to come from behind as Maximilian Beister nodded home Dennis Diekmeiers cross on the 24th minute. Schalke responded just before the break to the 2-1 deficit as Huntelaar wrapped up his brace by header from five meters to make it a two all draw.

The "Rothosen" grabbed the lead again when Lasse Sobiech headed home a corner by Rafael van der Vaart at the far post with four minutes into the second half. However, Schalke were again able to equalize the scores as new arrival Adam Szalai exploited a spill to restore parity on the 72nd minute.
