Jiading district police have arrested 29 suspects and seized more than 13,000 tablets of phony sexual enhancement drugs in a joint raid with local food and drug authorities, police said in a press release Monday.

Police arrested nine people at the end of June for selling the fake drugs - most of which were marketed as sexual enhancement pills, according to a press release from the Jiading District Public Security Bureau.

Police targeted 26 adult stores where the fake drugs were sold. The pills cost about 1 yuan ($0.16) to produce, but they were sold for prices up to 30 yuan a piece, police said.

Under Chinese criminal law, people who produce and sell fake drugs can be sentenced up to three years in prison. The sentence can be as high as 10 years if the drugs severely harm the health of someone who uses them.

The case was still under investigation Monday.
