Paraguayan millionaire president-elect announces cabinet lineup

Paraguayan President-elect, Horacio Cartes, who will be sworn in Thursday, presented on Monday his cabinet members to the media, according to news report reaching here.

Cartes, a millionaire businessman-turned-politician, told reporters in capital Asuncion that Eladio Loizaga will be his foreign minister, while Francisco de Vargas and German Rojas will respectively head the interior ministry and the finance ministry.

Bernardino Soto is in charge of defense, he said. The Minister of Public Works and Communications will be Ramon Jimenez, Sheila Abed will take over as Minister of Justice and Labor and Marta Lafuente as Education Minister.

Among others, Jorge Gattini takes the Agriculture Ministry, and Gustavo Leite heads the Trade Ministry.

"The list of ministers was based exclusively on their capabilities and knowledge," said Cartes, who joined the country's once long-ruling Colorado Party to run for presidency.

"I will make the maximum effort to gain the confidence of all the citizens," he said, adding "our main commitment is to all the people."

Cartes won the April 21 elections with 45 percent of the vote, bringing back to power the Colorado Party that had ruled for decades after defeating the Authentic Radical Liberal Party of acting president Federico Franco.
