At least 53 people were killed and 77 others injured in accidents in connection with the heavy rain and floods hitting most part of Sudan, the interior minister said Thursday.

A total of 40,578 families were affected and 20,027 houses were completely damaged nationwide, Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid said at a press conference.

He added that the rain and floods killed over 3,000 of cattle, noting that 251 facilities were affected, most of them schools.

He said the Nile level at Mugran station in Khartoum registered 17.4 meters, reiterating that the situation was under control.

The Sudanese Meteorological Authority forecasted that heavy rain would hit most part of the country again in the coming two days and advised the citizens to take precautions against possible accidents.

In the meantime, the water level of most part of the Nile's upper stream continues to rise, particularly in the Jabel Awliya area south of Khartoum, raising fears of imminent destructive floods.
