Tunisia's ruling Islamic party Ennahdha on Sunday reportedly accepted the idea of forming a government of technocrats, local media reported.

The government will be led by a well-known independent personality, head of the Democratic Alliance, Mahmoud El Baroudi, told Shems FM.

Meanwhile, there are also local reports suggesting that Ennahdha had accepted the resignation of the current government led by Ali Laarayedh. But the information could not be independently verified.

Ennahdha's reported reaction came after weeks of protests by thousands of people calling for the resignation of the current Islamic-led government.

The protests, organized by the National Salvation Front, a coalition of opposition parties, aim at setting up a new neutral government to run the country and organize general elections before 2014.

On Saturday, the front called for the launch of the "week of departure" to press the current government to leave and set up a roadmap for the country's Constituent Assembly to complete the drafting of the constitution.

The killing of Mohamed Brahmi in late July, the second political assassination in six months, has plunged Tunisia into a deep political crisis, against the background of soaring inflation and economic recession.

UGTT, the country's main labor union which has been brokering the talks between Ennahdha and the country's secular opposition, has repeatedly called for the formation of a national salvation government.

Observers note that, if confirmed, the breakthrough achieved on Sunday could signal a resumption of the activities of the Constituent Assembly which have been stalled after the withdrawal of 60 opposition representatives three weeks ago.
