A student at an IT vocational school in Chengdu, Sichuan Province has been given a lenient sentence of five months of detention and a 2,000 yuan-($326) fine, after disseminating pornography on the Internet, Chengdu Hi-tech District People's Court said.

The ruling that was reported Monday by China News Service said that the student, a freshman surnamed Tian, majoring in software development, had set up two porn websites in February, profiting from a number of online advertisements thanks to the clicks of Net users visiting his websites.

The court found that Tian had bought the two domains online from his dormitory room to establish the porn sites, which he regularly maintained and updated, uploading a total of 22 porn videos to the sites and earning around 2,000 yuan from popup advertisements in two months. By April, Tian had sold the website domains for 4,500 yuan, court officials said.

Addicted to using the Internet, Tian said that he did not know that what he did was illegal and told the court that he hoped to return to school as soon as possible.

The court said that it decided to go easy on Tian, given that it was his first crime and because he had pled guilty to the charge.

An individual found guilty of the same crime can be given up to 10 years in jail, according to Chinese criminal law.
