Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Djibouti on August 27 to begin his first official visit in the African continent.

Upon his arrival, Abe visited the Japanese Autodefence Forces base in the Red Sea country under the auspices of the international coalition for fighting against maritime piracy in the Indian Ocean.

The Japanese prime minister then held talks with Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh at the Republic's Palace.

Since 2009, Japan has deployed about 400 officers from its naval unit and about 190 officers from the airforce at the base in Djibouti.
