A home owner has been ordered to remove a shrine that he built in his Beijing apartment, after the illegal construction that he spent 10 million yuan ($1.63 million) on has been considered unsafe for the building, according to the city's construction committee, Beijing News reported Thursday.

The man surnamed Chen, who owns a Hubei-based mining company, began constructing the temple enshrining his ancestor in 2011.

He had the joint walls of two apartments knocked down to build the temple's frame measuring 8 meters tall by 4 meters wide - where a sculpture of his ancestor was placed in the center with a Buddhist statue.

Chen was told by the committee to put the walls back into the apartments to make sure the flats inside the building are structurally sound.

The decision comes after several residents complained that burning ash from the active temple also created fire hazards.
