Eight Afghan workers of a local mining company were killed and five others wounded late Saturday when the vehicle carrying them set off a roadside bomb in eastern Parwarn province, sources said Sunday.

"About 13 people were aboard the ill-fated vehicle, which touched off an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the road in Bagram district Saturday. The victims were going back home. Eight were killed and many of the injured were in critical conditions," the source told Xinhua, blaming the Taliban militants for planting the IED.

A main US airbase is also located in Bagram district, 55 km north of Kabul.

Taliban militants often attack Afghan and foreign forces with IEDs but the lethal weapons also inflict casualties on civilians.

The Taliban, which has intensified attacks since they launched annual rebel offensive late April, has yet to make comments.

On Friday, 12 civilian were killed in a similar incident in southern Helmand province.
