         Background

ASEAN, or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, was set up in 1967. It now comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. As the top trading partner of ASEAN, China initiated the China-ASEAN Expo or (CAEXOP) in 2003 and promoted it to an annual event. 2013 marks its 10th anniversary, both China and ASEAN countries have embraced great achievements during the past decade.

Chinese premier Li Keqiang said, "We will upgrade our policies and services for trade and investment between China and ASEAN countries. The two sides will further expand the content of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement. We will reduce tariffs and start a new round of negotiations for service trade. We will also simplify entrance policies for enterprises from ASEAN countries to conduct investment China. Meanwhile, China aims to sign a long-term trade agreement with ASEAN countries for the trade of agricultural products. By 2020, we will expand bilateral trade to one trillion US dollars, and increase two-way investment by 150 billion US dollars. "

With advances in bilateral cooperation in various fields and improved coordination, China is working to prevent economic crisis from breaking out at home, which will in turn benefit all ASEAN countries, the Xinhua News Agency commented on September 2.

The development of China-ASEAN relationship and regional peace and stability depends on whether mutual trust can be established,” Deng Yingwen, the director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies at Jinan University, told the Xinhua News Agency on August 31.

Deng said that over the next 10 years, mutual trust involving politics, economics and trade cooperation, as well as cultural and educational exchange between China and ASEAN countries, will all play a large role in promoting regional peace and stability, while serving as an engine for global economic growth.
