A Jaguar XJ owner was shocked to find the panels of his ride warped by the light reflected down from the opposite building on Eastcheap street in London, The Independence reported Tuesday.
You can't believe something like this would happen, said Martin Lindsay, the owner, a director of tiling company. He left his Jaguar for one hour and returned to find the wing mirror, panels and Jaguar badge melted, accompanied by the smell of burning plastic.
The under-construction building nicknamed "Walkie Talkie" has a concave shape and thus reflects a dazzling beam of light, caused by the current elevation of the sun. According to the joint statement from developers Land Securities and Canary Wharf, the phenomenon will last for about two hours a day and will be present for up to three weeks based on the initial modeling.
A van previously suffered similar damage.
"It's like trying to fry ants with a magnifying glass," said David Banks, a concerned passer-by.
The developers have agreed to pay £946 ($1,477) in repair costs to the Jaguar owner and made arrangements with local authorities to suspend parking at the three spaces which may be affected by the situation, the BBC reported.
The developers added that they are evaluating longer-term solutions to prevent future repeats.
