The Philippine government assured Monday that the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) would not be affected by the ongoing encounter in southern city of Zamboanga between the government troops and the Muslim rebels.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) would proceed this month as scheduled, adding the incident in Zamboanga should not hamper the talks with the MILF.

Lacierda said the agreement and its implementation is subject to a tripartite review next week by the government, Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).

He reiterated that the MNLF is not being left behind in the creation of the Bangsamoro region to replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

He stressed that the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB) , which the Aquino administration entered into with the MILF, would benefit all Muslims in Mindanao and not just the MILF.

He said the Indonesian government, which facilitated talks between the Philippine government and the MNLF that led to the 1996 peace agreement, had already been informed of the situation through their embassy in Manila.

The peace negotiations will resume on Tuesday in Malaysia where the government and the MILF peace panels would continue their discussions on the two remaining annexes -- the power-sharing and normalization -- of the framework agreement on the Bangsamoro.

Government troops clashed with members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in southern Philippine city of Zamboanga Monday morning, killing at lease two people and injuring 24 others.
