A woman in Shenyang, Liaoning Province takes "tiger mothering" to the Machiavellian level after telling her biological daughter for 13 years that she was adopted and her 'real mother' died long ago - to "cultivate her self-reliance."
The mother surnamed Shen told Shenyang Evening News on Tuesday that she made up the story to encourage Chengcheng, who was in fourth grade at the time, to be independent and not rely on her well-off family.
"I lied to make her study harder and improve herself," explained Shen.
Shen explains that her scare tactic encouraged her daughter to work very hard in school, adding Chengcheng even chose to attend a boarding school for high school to live more independently.
The truth was finally revealed to Chengcheng in her early 20s after she had graduated college, found a job in Shanghai and married.
Shen says skeptics only need to look at the results.
"My daughter is pretty and successful ... [and] has managed to earn 6,000 yuan ($980) a month right out of college. And she's married to a good man. Who's more fortunate than that?" said Shen.
