The Turkish army has seized more than 10 tonnes of cannabis in a large-scale operation in southeastern Turkey, Turkey's Diyarbakir Governor Cahit Kirac said Sunday.

About 500 Turkish security forces and 25 teams of Turkish gendarme forces and police took part in the anti-drugs operation in Lice town of Diyarbakir province on Saturday, Kirac was quoted as saying by private Dogan news agency, adding that the drugs were confiscated.

The campaign is the "largest anti-drug operation" in the past few years, according to Kirac.

Turkey has long been a key transit point along the drug smuggling route from Asia and Middle East to Europe.
