UIM F2 powerboat racing pilot Paolo Zantelli was killed on Sunday as two powerboats collided near Italy's Milan, local reports said.

The 48-year-old pilot remained underwater, probably unconscious, for some time after his powerboat hit another one and capsized at the Idroscalo, an artificial lake near Milan, during a grand prix race.

He died later in the day after he was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical conditions, according to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Zantelli was considered Italy's leading expert of his sports category. In his 17-year-old career in the UIM F2, he won two gold, two silver and one bronze medals in European championships.
