Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that negotiations with Israel, resumed in July, were a historic opportunity to make peace, the official news agency Wafa reported Wednesday.

Abbas told reporters in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly that the Palestinian leadership will spare no effort to remove obstacles on the way of negotiations.

"We will get past all obstacles to succeed on the negotiating table until the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders," Abbas said.

On Tuesday, Abbas met US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It was the first meeting between the two presidents since Washington convinced the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table with Israel after a three-year halt of the Mideast peace talk.

Last year, the UN recognized Palestine as a non-member observer state amid Israeli and US opposition.

Abbas said he was happy to be in New York this year to attend the UN General Assembly with Palestine participating as an observer state.
