A two-story structure built atop a small bridge in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province teeters in legal limbo as authorities decide how to handle its demolition.

Officials explain the unsound yet occupied 22-year-old building in Xuzhai village was illegally built above a local river on a custom-made platform, but had escaped demolition due to complications with permits and bureaucratic miscommunication.

"The building is very dangerous and may cave in at any second. It is really a miracle it lasted for over 20 years, " said a local engineer surnamed Chi.

The property owner was unavailable for comment and the local government is still working on solutions to accommodate the structure's current residents.
