Four Syrians have died in eastern Cambodia when their car accidently drove off a road and fell into an overflowing pond on the roadside Monday, police said.

The accident occurred Monday morning in Baphnom district of eastern Prey Veng province when a car, carrying six Syrians and one Cambodian driver, fell into the pond, said On Sokhun, Baphnom police chief.

"Two women and two children -- each aged about one year old-- had drowned during the accident,"he told Xinhua over telephone. "One Syrian man is alive and two are still missing."

It is unknown if the victims are in the same family and what they do in Cambodia because the surviving man cannot communicate in English, he said.

"The man just pointed out in the map that his country is Syria," On Sokhun said.

Cambodia has been suffering from flooding. In the last two weeks, at least 28 people had drowned and some 73,600 families have been affected, Keo Vy, chief of the Cabinet of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), said Sunday.
