New Zealand Police on Thursday said the arrest of a man in Australia on child abuse charges after a tip off from New Zealand demonstrated the resolve of international law enforcement agencies to tackle child exploitation.

The New Zealand Police's child exploitation prevention unit OCEANZ (Online Child Exploitation Across New Zealand) said they had identified New South Wales man Matthew David Cornish, 38, as a potential risk to children and passed on the intelligence to New South Wales police.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Michael, of OCEANZ, said the case was a great example of the close working relationship the New Zealand Police had with counterparts in Australia.

"Individuals who use the Internet to exploit children need to realize that police, and their colleagues in the New Zealand Customs Service and Department of Internal Affairs, are always seeking to identify and prosecute individuals that are victimizing children," Michael said in a statement.

"It doesn't matter what country a child offender is in. We are part of a global effort to stamp out child exploitation."

Cornish appeared in a New South Wales court on Wednesday charged with two counts of producing, disseminating or possessing child abuse material, among other alleged offenses.
