Four young people in Qingyuan, Guangdong Province beat the recent crowds and enjoyed a quiet National Day holiday by drifting along the Beijiang River in a boat made of 360 plastic bottles.
Their 3.2-meter-long canoe, made of wire mesh and rebar frame filled with 360 plastic bottles, was able to float past crowds of tourists for seven hours during China's peak travel period known as "Golden Week".
"It only took us two days to design and build the boat. We also tested that the boat could work well in loading four adult men," explained the boat's inventor, who preferred to be identified by his Internet user name "gdqy".
The quartet of outdoor enthusiasts, two men and two women, paddled the "Beijiang No.1" for more than 30 kilometers along the Beijiang, a tributary of the Zhujiang River.
"We saved ourselves from crowds of people and long queues," said gdqy. "It's great for us people in Qingyuan to spend the holiday in our own way."
