Cats stuck in trees are a common sight, but villagers in Zhouzhi county, Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province were shocked to find a giant panda up a giant spruce tree 20 meters off the ground.

Locals had laid out a wide net to catch the rotund rascal before calling the nearby reserve station.

The panda had fallen asleep in the tree minutes after they arrived.

Tao Qinghua, an employee at the county’s nature reserve explained that the panda, which he estimates to be about 10 years old and weigh 100 kilograms, had escaped the nature reserve and was probably chased up the tree by predators.

Tao said pandas are natural climbers and they could remain lounging in the branches for up to two days without eating.

Li Xiangfeng, the head of the reserve station, explained this was the second time that pandas had wandered near area settlements since the station was established in 1993.

The report did not mention if the panda had descended from the tree.
