Myanmar Friday linked the recent series of bomb blasts in five cities to a business organization of the ethnic Kayin National Union (KNU) which has made peace with the central government.

The five cities are Yangon, Mandalay, Sagaing, Toungoo and Phyu.

Myanmar Police Chief Major General Zaw Win told a press conference that the government believed the bombings had no connection with the KNU as a whole but the said organization according to the evidence confessed by eight suspect bombers detained, including Saw Myint Lwin.

Zaw Win said the bombings were aimed at disrupting the country's tourist industry and hindering the inflow of foreign investment in local undertakings.

He disclosed that Saw Myint Lwin had worked with KNU five years ago and his activities was masterminded by Saw Shwe Htoo who runs a business undertaking of the KNU, saying that Saw Shwe Htoo, who personally committed the bombings in Mandalay and Sagaing, remains at large.

Efforts are being made to expose other culprits in connection with the bombings in the five cities.

Claiming that the incidents would not impact on the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Myanmar, Zaw Win said the security for the SEA Games will be tightened, while presidential spokesman U Ye Htut said that the incidents would not affect the ongoing domestic peace talks with ethnic rebel groups.

Moreover, he vowed that the government would cooperate with the INTERPOL to curb terrorism, saying that preparation is being made to submit a draft anti-terrorism bill to the parliament to enhance fight against terrorism.

There were six bomb blasts with four unexploded in Yangon, Mandalay, Sagaing, Toungoo and Phyu from Oct. 9 to 15, in which two people died in Toungoo guest house bombing on Oct. 11, he added.

Another bomb blast at Yangon's Traders Hotel on Oct. 14 injured an American.

Namkham in eastern Shan state also experienced similar bomb attacks on Oct. 16 and 17, in which one person was killed and six others were injured.

The authorities said that the recent bombings were deliberate acts to create public panic and disrupt peace and stability and rule of law in the country when Myanmar took over ASEAN chair and is about to host Southeast Asian Games.
