A man was detained in Macheng, Hubei Province for his alleged involvement in a series of online cons where he posed as an international contract killer from Hong Kong.
The suspect surnamed Zhu is believed to have scammed a total 370,000 yuan ($60,754) from seven different women across China with his con, which involved borrowing money from women he met online with the promise of a "big reward" after he accessed his Swiss bank account.
Macheng police caught up with Jiangxi Province-native after they received a tip-off from a victim who claimed she had lost 22,000 yuan after meeting Zhu in an online chatroom.
The victim told police Zhu claimed to be an orphan adopted by an underground crime ring and was trained as a hit man from youth. As part of his scam, Zhu posted pictures of his supposed guns and on-the-job injuries, as well as provided the victim with a Hong Kong phone number.
A police investigation is still underway, and no formal charges have been pressed.
