The National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center warned on Friday that Typhoon Krosa might cause huge waves in the South China Sea.

Typhoon Krosa entered the South China Sea on Friday morning and is moving toward the east coast of Hainan Island, the center said.

Waves of four to six meters were detected in the waters near Dongsha Island in the South China Sea on Friday afternoon, the center said.

From Friday night to Saturday, waves of five to eight meters are expected in the northern part of the South China Sea and waves of 2.5 to three meters will be seen in the Taiwan Strait and off the coast of Guangdong Province, according to the center.

It warned all vessels off the affected waters since waves are likely to reach nine meters or higher as the typhoon develops.

Authorities should also step up patrols along the embankments and reinforce those vulnerable sections, the center urged.
