A romantic comedy that addresses mistresses and "leftover" men and women, The Old Cinderella will bring a heartfelt message to audiences in 2014. In a news conference held yesterday in Beijing, executive producer Lu Chuan, director Wu Bai, and Zhang Jingchu, Pan Yueming and Kenji Wu shared their experiences in the making of the film.

Adapted from popular online novel Ruguo Buneng Haohao Ai ("If You Can't Love"), the film begins in the wake of a divorce. Starting from the viewpoint of the female protagonist Xu Ke (Zhang), the film tackles many of today's social topics such as extramarital affairs. All the while, the film stays light and humorous.

Though Zhang's usual image is an elegant woman, she tosses that aside as she throws herself into the character of Xu Ke, an unkempt woman with harsh words.

"It is very satisfactory work in my last four to five years," said Zhang, adding that this is also the first time she has been a producer.

Zhang is not the only person who experienced a "first" with The Old Cinderella. Lu Chuan, who is known for directing serious films like Mountain Patrol (2004), is trying out the role of executive producer.

He explained at the news conference that he chose post-1980 director Wu Bai to capture the eye of the younger generation, as Jiang Wen did to him with 2002's The Missing Gun.

For the pop singer and musician Kenji Wu, The Old Cinderella marks his screen debut. By acting a handsome fu er dai (the second generation of rich people), he is sure to attract more female fans.

As the slogan of this film - "It is never too late" - goes, the film is to encourage the busy urban dwellers to cherish the people around them.
