A Chinese woman has given birth to a 6.17-kilogram baby, crediting a diet of milk, eggs and fruit for her super-sized bundle of joy.

The 27-year-old mother and her child, who weighs more than six bags of sugar and almost twice the weight of an average Chinese newborn, are said to be in good health.

Doctors at the Shanghai hospital where the child was born said the mother had eaten much more than usual and spent a lot of time in bed while pregnant. They said she gained weight quickly, which made the embryo grow beyond the average size.

The mother said, "I drink one glass of milk (and) eat an egg every day. That's a must since I became pregnant. I also ate a lot of fruit."

A relative added, "Soup with chicken, pigeon and fish is normal for an expectant mother, as well as seafood including shrimp and fish."

China's biggest ever newborn is believed to be Chun Chun, from Xinxiang in Henan Province, who tipped the scales at 7.04 kilograms in 2012.
