US pig farmer prompts animal cruelty debate

A recent video clip online showing a US farmer abusing pigs on his farm has caused a commotion among Chinese Net users, some of whom are indifferent to the action while a majority are outraged at the Oklahoma man's behavior.

The video shows the farmer hitting a pig on the head with a plank, then putting glue in the animal's ear and anus, cutting off its tail with scissors - and then kicking the pig in and throwing it on the ground.

Many Net users said the man's behavior was too crude.

"I'm not against eating meat, but I am against animal cruelty. We shouldn't treat animals who feel pain like this," said Net user Yulenglin.

Others did not see a huge problem with the video.

"Pigs are meant to be eaten; it doesn't make a difference to me if the meat I eat came from an animal that was slaughtered or abused to death," said Net user Nihaoajiang.

But Net user Shybuxiangbiandreamer said that eating meat equates to "bloodily and cruelly" killing animals, and as such, people should "all try to become vegetarians."

Some, meanwhile, argued that meat-eaters, not the farmer, deserve the real blame.

"It's like the old saying; the one who is ultimately responsible for the death makes a greater sin than the one who does the killing," said Net user Asirgege.
