Tensions following China's establishment of its first Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) flared up on Monday, as Chinese authorities rebuked Japan's irresponsible accusations and the two countries summoned the ambassador for each other to lodge protests.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said at a parliamentary session on Monday that China's declaration of the zone is "very dangerous" and may cause unexpected consequences, AFP reported.

"Japan will ask China to restrain itself while we continue cooperating with the international community," Abe said.

Japan's Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday called the move "a one-sided action which leads us to assume the danger of unpredictable events on the spot."

Assistant Chinese Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang on Monday summoned the Japanese Ambassador Kitera Masato and lodged solemn representations, according to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry on Monday.

Japan summoned the Chinese Ambassador to Tokyo to lodge a protest.

Chinese defense ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said early on Monday that Japan's remarks are "utterly groundless and unacceptable" as China had explained its policy on the zone.

Japan has no right to make irresponsible remarks on the setup of the air defense identification zone, Yang said.
