Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Tuesday named two women who are to join the ongoing peace talks with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels held in the Cuban capital of Havana.
The women negotiators are Nigeria Renteria and Maria Paulina Riveros. Renteria, an administrative law expert and top presidential advisor for women's equality, will be representing the victims of the five-decade conflict between FARC and government forces, most of whom are women.
"Nigeria will focus on gender and equality in the talks," said Santos. "She will constantly travel between Havana and Bogota to establish an adequate channel of communication with women's organizations, who have much to contribute."
Riveros, a lawyer and human rights director at the Colombian Interior Ministry, will strengthen government delegation in talks over victims, territory and substitution of illegal crops.
Reparations to victims and aid to Colombian farmers are two of the five central issues of the talks.
The two sides agreed on a five-point peace agenda in August last year, including agricultural reform, political participation, FARC's withdrawal from the drug trade, recognition of victims' rights and ending the conflict.
