The Philippine government is seeking to further improve a rehabilitation plan for areas devastated by typhoon Haiyan, locally named "Yolanda," before it is implemented, a senior government official said Wednesday.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III and members of his Cabinet met on Wednesday to discuss the "Yolanda Recovery and Rehabilitation Plan."

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said that while Aquino has "approved in principle" the rehabilitation plan, he is seeking "more specific details" prior to granting his formal approval.

"The President approved in principle many of the items cited, but asked (Socioeconomic Planning) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan and other pertinent members of the Cabinet for more specific details before providing formal approval," Lacierda said.

Aquino and his Cabinet members will meet again on Friday to discuss further refinements to the plan, particularly the immediate actions that need to be undertaken.

"The President's overarching instruction to the Cabinet was to do what can be done now," Lacierda said.

Typhoon Haiyan, which battered central Philippines, killed some 5,500 people and injured 26,136 others. It also destroyed billions worth of infrastructure and crops and rendered more than 3 million people homeless.
