Cambodia has currently had 2.36 million registered automobiles and motorcycles, according to the figures of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport on Friday.

The country has 377,660 cars, buses, and trucks, and 1.98 million motorcycles, said the figures.

Vehicles are mostly purchased from Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, China, South Korea, the United States, and Britain. Japan-branded vehicles are the most popular ones here.

Preap Chan Vibol, director of the Ministry's Transport Department, said among the registered vehicles, about 20 percent was brand new and 80 percent was used vehicles.

"The figures do not include tens of thousands of vehicles on sales in shops across the country," he said.

Increasing number of vehicles is one of the factors attributing to the rise in road deaths, he said, adding that at least 1,470 persons were killed in road accidents in the first nine months of this year.

"It is estimated that 5 persons die of road accidents every day," he said.
