UN secretary-general's special representative in Haiti Sandra Honore has welcomed the vote on the electoral law by the Haitian legislature, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said Friday.
In a joint statement along with several other representatives of the international community, Honore said the vote "marks a significant milestone for the organization of inclusive, transparent and democratic elections," Nesirky said at a daily news briefing here.
The statement urges all stakeholders to continue to work together to strengthen democracy and stability in Haiti, both of which are essential to socio-economic development, said the spokesman.
The electoral law, which helps pave the way for long-delayed elections in the country, was passed this week by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. Elections were originally slated for November 2011.
The UN and other international actors have urged Haiti to hold the elections before the end of this year. Even with the passage of the vote, it's not clear whether that will be possible.
