A roadside bomb struck a police van in Afghanistan's southern Zabul province, leaving three police dead and injuring three others on Tuesday, deputy to provincial governor Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar said.

"The police chief of Arghandab district was on the way to provincial capital Zabul city when a mine planted by militants struck his motorcade at 01:30 p.m. local time, killing three of his guards and injuring three others including the police chief," Rasoulyar told Xinhua.

According to Rasoulyar, the police chief was slightly injured in the blast.

He blamed Taliban militants for the attack, saying that the armed outfit by conducting terrorist activities wanted to terrorize the people.

Meantime, an official said on condition of anonymity that three police were killed and seven others sustained injuries in the blast.

However, a doctor who declined to be identified said that the bodies of three police officers and nine injured policemen had been taken to hospital in Zabul city.

This is the second blast in the day in the southern region of Afghanistan where Taliban militants are active.

The previous attack which hit Marja district in neighboring Helmand province left two persons dead and 10 others injured.
