A local Taliban leader was killed earlier on Tuesday in a US drone attack in eastern Afghanistan's Kunar province, a police chief said.

"The Taliban key leader named Mawlawi Attaullah along with five of his comrades were killed following a drone strike conducted by the NATO-led coalition forces Tuesday morning," provincial police chief Abibullah Sayyedkhil told Xinhua.

The unmanned aircraft fired at least two missiles on a compound where a Taliban meeting was underway in Tinter area of Manogay district at around 9:30 a.m. local time, the police chief said, adding no civilian was hurt in the attack.

The Taliban insurgent group has not made comments so far.

In a separate incident, two civilians were wounded when more than 20 rockets fired by the Taliban hit several areas in the neighboring Shegal district earlier on Tuesday, the source added.

The mountainous Kunar province with Asadabad as its capital, 180 km east of the country's capital Kabul, is a known Taliban hotbed.
