A husband and a wife who are both working on a doctorate in philosophy at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province have chosen to open a street vendor shop selling taokyaki (Japanese octopus balls) in the pursuit to apply their studies to life.

The food stall, "Doctor Takoyaki" has been popular among customers, said the couple, who formed the business to prove that philosophy graduates are not pigeon-holed into just teaching or civil servant jobs as widely believed.

The husband said that their level of understanding of philosophy allows them to "learn from everything, including cooking."

The couple denies that they started the business after being unable to land "real jobs."

"Every time I see kids happily eating our takoyaki, I feel that my value is realized," said the wife.
