Fengxian district police have arrested an Anhui Province man whom local residents accused of molesting at least two young girls, local media reported Thursday.

Police took the migrant worker, surnamed Dai, 47, into custody Wednesday following a confrontation with fellow residents in Qingcun town, according to a press release Thursday from the Fengxian District Public Security Bureau.

The residents, a group of angry parents, went to the man's home on Xinqun Road Wednesday evening to confront him, according to a report on the news portal xinmin.cn. The parents accused the man of fondling two local girls, who are both about 7 years old.

Police arrived at the scene around 7 pm and took the man into custody, the report said.

The group of parents called the police after going to Dai's apartment, according to the press release.

Police said Dai lured children to his apartment, where he sexually assaulted them. They did not disclose how many children were assaulted or release details about the abuse.

According to the news report, a 4-year-old child told the parents that the man lured children to his apartment with food.

Neighbors said the accused man has a wife and a high school-aged daughter in his hometown in Anhui, according to the report. They said he worked for a local factory and didn't have a close relationship with his neighbors.

Under China's Criminal Law, one can be sentenced up to five years in prison for molesting a child under 14 years old and more than 10 years in prison for raping a child under 14.

Earlier this year, a 52-year-old man surnamed Dong was charged with sexually abusing three girls in Huangpu district in September. The girls were all about 5 years old.

Authorities said that Dong lured the girls back to his home with the promise of chocolate candy.

The Huangpu District People's Prosecutor's Office said last month that it would charge Dong, who had served four and a half years in prison for a past child molestation conviction.

In another case, a 79-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping an 8-year-old girl in Jiading district in 2008, people.com.cn reported.
