The Colorado high school shooting suspect had showed violent tendencies before wounding two students with a shotgun and taking his own life on Friday, according to fellow students at the high school.

The shooter was identified by other students as a senior on the debate team at Arapahoe High School in a Denver suburb.

The shooting began after the shooter went on an angry, "military-style" search for the debate team coach, running down hallways and yelling his name, witnesses said.

The school's custodian Fabian Llerenas, who helped the coach out a side door and into his vehicle in time to flee the area, said the shooter wore tactical gear and sprinted from room to room looking for the coach.

"He was screaming the name of the coach over and over again," one fellow student said.

After shooting and missing the coach, the disgruntled student "apparently took his own life," Sheriff Grayson Robinson told a press conference.

"He showed violent tendencies," fellow student Frank Woronoff told CNN. "One time he got locked out of a classroom, and he was pounding on the door and cursing the teacher."

One of the wounded students, a girl, was hospitalized in serious condition. The other student suffered minor gunshot-related injuries and was released from the hospital hours later, authorities said.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper lauded the systematic and organized reaction the high school and authorities made to the crisis, saying 70 classrooms filled with 2,229 students were first "locked down," then emptied by Swat (Special Weapons and Tactics) teams with extreme organization and efficiency.

Friday's shooting was one day before the first anniversary of the horrific east coast elementary shooting last December at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newton, Connecticut, which left 20 students and six adults dead.

Arapahoe High School is only 15 miles (24 km) from last year's movie theater massacre where 12 were killed and 58 wounded by a lone gunman.
