Serious violence erupted in Samsung factory in Vietnam's northern Thai Nguyen province on Thursday, drawing participation of thousands of workers. One was allegedly killed in the violence, and four others are in severe condition in hospital, local media reported.
Due to a conflict in behavior between security forces and workers, about three to four thousand workers attacked security guards in building site of Samsung factory in Thai Nguyen province, some 60 km north of capital Hanoi, Vietnamese local Dan Tri ( Knowledge for People) online newspaper reported.
Nguyen Van Giang, head of security team of Samsung Thai Nguyen said on Dan Tri that the incident happened when security stopped a worker from entering the site without entrance card. After the worker was beaten to faint with electric baton, the crowd of three to four thousand workers seemed to be uncontrollable and they started to burn containers set as working houses of security and police as well as motorbikes.
The clash left four people injured who are later taken to hospital, said Duong Ngoc Long, chairperson of people's committee of Thai Nguyen province.
Long told VNExpress online newspaper that "the situation is very complicated," adding that police have been sent to resettle the dispute.
In 2013, Samsung, a South Korean multinational electronics company, invested a total of 3.2 billion US dollars to build a high-tech complex in Vietnam's northern Thai Nguyen province to produce Integrated Circuit, or IC chip, and electronic components for mobile phones.
Upon completion, Thai Nguyen-based factory is expected to be the largest Samsung site in the world that will start running in March 2014.
