Turkey has scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to intercept two Syrian aircraft nearing its border, a military statement said on Thursday.

The two F-16 jets were scrambled to Turkey's border with the war-torn country as a Syrian SU-24 plane east of the Cilvegozu border in a southeastern province of Syria was detected approaching, said the statement issued by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces.

The Syrian warplane changed its route when it was 6.7 km away from the border with Turkey, according to the statement.

Similar incidents of border violations have taken place since a Turkish F-16 was shot down in September 2012 by the Syrian army when it reportedly entered Syria's airspace, according to local media.

Turkey, once an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has become a leading voice urging his ouster and has allegedly provided Syrian rebel leaders with sanctuary.
